AHAIN awards 2014 Ralph Biggs Scholarship

It is with great pleasure that the Affordable Housing Association of Indiana announces Amber Walstra as the 2014 AHAIN Ralph E. Biggs Scholarship recipient.
Amber is a resident of Pines Apartments of Hebron III, managed by R J Wells Management, in Hebron, Indiana. Her site manager is Lahoma Hardock.

Amber is currently a student in the Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) Program at the University of St. Francis Crown Point. She began the program in the Fall 2012 semester and has earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.52 on a 4.0 scale, to date.

One of Amber’s instructors stated in a letter of recommendation, “She has always displayed a high degree of integrity, responsibility and ambition. Amber consistently demonstrates an eagerness to learn, application of nursing knowledge, effective communication skills and teamwork while simultaneously balancing home and family life. She is also an active participant in the Student Nurses Association (SNA) and will be assisting with the pinning ceremony planning this semester.”
In her essay for the scholarship application on the topic, “Why housing is an essential right”, Amber describes the importance of affordable housing in furthering her education, especially as a single mother.

“… I didn’t give up because I was given a chance to succeed. I have been able to continue my education while still giving my daughter the protected environment that she was use to without disrupting her all while teaching her that giving up is not an option. Even with all the obstacles that come along with being a single parent I still try to instill in my daughter that with hard work anything is possible.”

The Ralph E. Biggs Scholarship will provide for $750 per semester, for a total of $1,500 per academic year, provided the recipient remains a full time student with a B average.
